How to Start an LLC in Alaska (2026)
Last updated: August 28, 2026
Quick note: we're operators, not attorneys or accountants. This is general educational info, not legal or tax advice. The business licence is separate from the LLC filing and it expires every December 31, not on your anniversary.
Alaska has the highest formation fee in the country and one of the lightest tax regimes, so the money goes in at the start rather than every April. The catch is the separate business licence that trips up almost every first-time filer. Here is the whole process in plain English, written for people starting something real like a courier route.
How to start a Alaska LLC in 6 steps
Name it, appoint an Alaska registered agent, file the Articles ($250), get the $50 business licence, get a free EIN, then file the $100 biennial report by January 2.
Name your Alaska LLC
The name must be distinguishable from other Alaska entities and include an LLC designator. Search it in the Alaska Corporations Division search before filing. Alaska also asks you to state your NAICS business purpose code on the Articles, so have that ready.
Appoint an Alaska registered agent
You need a registered agent with a physical Alaska street address. Alaska requires the agent to be an Alaska resident or a business authorised in the state, so if you live elsewhere this is a paid service. Northwest includes agent service free the first year with their $39 filing.
File the Articles of Organization
File with the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing. The fee is $250, the highest formation fee of any state. Online filing is the fastest route.
Get your Alaska business licence
This is the step people miss. Every business operating in Alaska needs a state business licence, which costs $50 for one year or $100 for two. All licences expire on December 31, so buying one in November gets you a very short first year. Certain professions need an additional professional licence on top.
Get a free EIN from the IRS
Your EIN is free at irs.gov and takes about ten minutes. You need it for the business bank account, contracts, and hiring. Never pay a third-party site for one. This is also the moment to write your operating agreement, which Alaska does not require but every bank asks about.
File the $100 biennial report by January 2
Alaska uses a biennial report, not an annual one. It is $100 for a domestic LLC ($200 for a foreign LLC) and is due by January 2, with late penalties applying to reports marked after February 1. An initial report is also required shortly after formation.
